Roofing Project in Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) Affected Communities

2015-04-14 22:06:33

A total of 18 households in Medellin, Northern Cebu benefited from the “Project Pagbangon-Roofing” headed by Juanito I. King Foundation, Inc. as post-Yolanda rehabilitation assistance to the town last October 24, 2014.

The foundation in partnership with the Charities Aid Foundation International, Municipality of Medellin and Medellin Farmers Incorporated was able to give roofing materials including corrugated sheets, tarpaulins, lumbers, nails and tools to the families with houses that were badly-devastated by the Super-Typhoon Yolanda last Nov. 8, 2013.

The program prioritized beneficiaries from the remote barangays of Medellin who haven’t received any rehabilitation assistance after being ravaged by the storm. “No one was able to reach us after Yolanda. Our place is not that accessible and even until now we haven’t received any relief that may help us rebuild our houses.” a beneficiary said in Cebuano.

It can be seen that most roofs of the houses helped were either made of tarpaulins or worn-out iron sheets. “If it rains hard, we just patch the holes on the tarpaulins so that the water won’t leak inside the house. Sometimes, when a strong wind passes by, it blows the roof off the house and we have to put it back again.” one of the recipients told.

“Nalipay lang sad mi na naa mo ihatag bisag ingun ana lang basta makaporma lang mi sa amo balay. Dako namo na pasalamat na naa’y nakakita sa amo sitwayon karun.” (We are very thankful for your help. It would be very useful in building our houses back. We are grateful that someone was able to see our situation now.) a beneficiary added.

The roofing project in Medellin is funded by Charities Aid Foundation International (CAF) a registered UK charity that provides services and assistance to UK and international charities and their donors, as well as promoting donation to charity in general.

Our Volunteers:Their Stories

2015-03-05 19:02:42

My experience in tent city was very touching. The people there needed help and they need support to stand back up again. It really feels great seeing our very own helping others.
- David Biaño

It’s nice to share the blessings that God showered on us. Helping people in need is one of the things that I can do to give back. This experience is one of my greatest achievements and I will never forget this day.
-Wenalen B. Entera

The experience was very enlightening for my part and fulfilling for the survivors because they know they are not alone. Despite the heat of the sun, the volunteers go on because of the smiles on the survivors’ faces. Putting up the Scholar’s Party is worth it when you see them happy. I love the experience. Thank you!
- Rochelle Marie P. Abelgas

It’s very nice to help people in need. Sharing joy and happiness to other people. This experience is one of the most unforgettable. Thank you JIKFI! - Janyn A. Sanchez

It is very fulfilling to share your happiness to other people. By this means of sharing blessings, we are able to put smiles on their faces. It was one of the best Christmas gifts I had given by spending time with them and myself. Let’s give love not just on Christmas Day!
- Ma. Fatima C. Pelago

The experience in helping the Yolanda survivors in the tent city was very heart warming. Seeing the old people and kids have fun also made me smile and laugh. It was an honor to help and represent JIKFI.

2015-03-05 19:01:36

Cebu City- A total of 2,500 indigenous tree seedlings were planted during the tree-planting activity spearheaded by Juanito I. King Foundation, Inc. (JIKFI) in Sitio Cantipla 1, Tabunan, Cebu City last October 4, 2014.

Dubbed as “My Tree” Project, the activity was aimed at making tree-planting as a personal advocacy, where participants were allowed to have the trees they planted as their own; they were encouraged to commit in taking care of the seedlings through the frequent monitoring of the foundation’s partner the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSB).

The project aims to ensure 80 percent survival rate of the seedlings planted through a scientific monitoring and eventually adopt a one-hectare of forest land to rehabilitate by planting forest and fruit-bearing trees.

A total of 54 employee-volunteers from the King’s Quality Food, Inc., Skygo Marketing Corp., Nito’s Auto Supply, Inc., Nito’s International Ventures, Inc., Cebu Subzero & Logistics, Inc., Juanito King & Sons, Inc., King Properties and RDAK Transport Equipment, Inc. participated during the activity.

They were taught on the proper handling and planting of trees.

Reforestation Project

The activity was held in cooperation with the PBSB in support of its reforestation project in the central Cebu protected landscape and was sponsored by J. Nitton Development Corporation, RCBC and Career First Institute.
